The Post-Apocalyptic MMO Reveals Massive Expansion With New Vegas References and Walton Goggins

This marks the 64th major content addition since its launch, Fallout 76 is gearing up to receive its most substantial expansion yet during the holiday season. Called Burning Springs, this massive update will introduce additional firepower, new missions, and transport players to the newly accessible territory of Ohio.

A Remarkable Transformation

At one point, the idea of this online Fallout experience obtaining such a major update a considerable time after debut would have been considered unimaginable. At the time the online experience first launched in 2018, it faced criticism from reviewers and the community who considered the early build unpolished and half-baked. Many believed it would follow the path as similar online attempts of that time.

We have consistently trusted in this project, commented the creative director. Our launch was kind of like the beginning of our story. Players emerge and they don't see anybody there, and they become familiar with their world. The team's strategy was just staying focused and continuing to produce the experiences that we believe our players will appreciate, and that we as players ourselves.

Discovering Unexplored Regions

The new content represents the most substantial expansion to date. The most significant aspect is the geographical extension, allowing players to travel beyond into the Ohio region and investigate what events have unfolded there. Fair warning: Danger lurks!

The designers explained that exploring a different region after so many years in Appalachia presented an perfect chance to work with an previously unexplored area within the Fallout universe.

We had not extensively covered this region in the game's history in depth, explained the creative director. Starting from the existing territory, if you move east, you begin entering the Washington DC area. That area is well established. The Ohio territory remained developed too much. Therefore, Fallout 76 being taking place first in the chronology gives us multiple development possibilities. The team wanted to discover what's transpiring in Ohio!

Taking Cues from Fan Favorites

The most stands out about Fallout 76's version of this new territory is that it's presented as a desert wasteland. This may look surprising given the typical climate of Ohio, but there's a strategic rationale for this design decision: The aesthetic was directly influenced by Fallout 3 and the Mojave Desert.

Rather than directly replicating elements from those games, the creators concentrated on representing the core feeling of those experiences within Burning Springs.

Our approach wasn't focused on looking at those installments and saying we need specific elements, clarified the creative director. Our goal aimed to accomplish was embracing the characteristic feel of those previous titles and having that faithfully captured in Burning Springs. The direction I instructed the designers when we started development on the new region was: It must include desert environments, iconic creatures, and numerous raiders. To me, that embodies what the third installment and New Vegas are all about. Those are the key components that establish the characteristic feel of those experiences, and so I aimed to have that recreated here.

Amazon Show Incorporation

The success of the Fallout television series created a noticeable increase in user engagement for the online game, with accounts indicating a multiple times engagement boost. The creators recognized they needed to leverage this opportunity, but didn't have the necessary time to execute a comprehensive connection right away.

The solution came through logical evolution when the team found the natural intersection with Walton Goggins' character, who functions as a mission providing vendor within the new expansion.

We were figuring out what this new region would include, what the overall tone would be, and then what the primary feature of the expansion area would develop into, that's bounty hunting, stated the development lead. So who better to host bounty hunting than Walton Goggins? He being a dedicated fan of the series too, he was extremely enthusiastic to collaborate with us and achieve this integration. So it didn't start as from the beginning, but it developed through natural progression of the feature.

Additional Content

Burning Springs isn't the final major update for the MMO. The studio is currently developing on the first substantial next year's content and preparing more expansions continuing as far as the 72nd update.

There was a moment where we couldn't imagine there would ever be an seventy-sixth expansion, remarked the production director. Now we're at a point where circumstances have become so great, for both the show and the game. It's genuinely somewhat incredible to contemplate that there's an seventy-sixth expansion that could potentially coincide with, potentially, whatever comes next!

Persistent success of Fallout 76 represents a testament to the development team's commitment and clear direction to building upon their original concept while naturally including fresh content that enrich rather than disturb the existing universe.
