Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
