Substantial Internet Outage Affects Dozens Websites and Apps

A widespread web failure has disrupted numerous websites and applications around the world, and users experiencing issues connecting to the web due to difficulties at the web hosting platform.

The affected platforms include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-managed operations such as its key e-commerce site and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was affected along with its affiliates Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were also reports of difficulties using the HMRC online portal on Monday morning. Furthermore across the UK, several Ring device owners turned to online platforms to report their security devices were failing.

Just within Britain, notifications of disruptions on specific apps reached the thousands for each platform.

Amazon reported that the problem began in the east coast of the United States at Amazon Web Services, a section that supplies essential internet infrastructure for many businesses, who lease resources on AWS infrastructure. AWS is the biggest global online services system.

Soon after the start of the day (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), Amazon confirmed “higher error rates and delays” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. The cascading impact seemed to disrupt services around the world, with the Downdetector site reporting outages with the identical platforms in various regions.

The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that tracks online failures, also reported a rise in issues on Monday morning, with many of them located in the state of Virginia, the region of the AWS US-East-1 zone where the company stated the problems started.
