Boston's Leader Michelle Wu Addresses President Trump's Warning to Relocate World Cup Games from City

Boston's mayor, Michelle Wu, implied that the city was prepared for a dispute with President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could order FIFA to remove World Cup matches from the stadium in Foxborough, situated 22 miles southwest of the city.

Mayor Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast recently to address comments from the Trump administration, which had labeled her as "radical left." President Trump had threatened that he would contact the head of FIFA if Boston did not "improve its situation."

A great deal of it is secured by contract so that no one, even if they live in the White House, can undo it.

Wu continued, "We live in a time where for attention, for control, to test limits ... repeated warnings ... are directed at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and comply or be obedient to a divisive plan."

She also remarked, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be part of a discussion that is targeting what Boston stands for." Wu finished by stressing her support for the city, declaring, "Fully committed for our city."

Trump's Comments and FIFA Role

Earlier this week, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen with President Trump at the international summit in Egypt. The FIFA president has also visited the Oval Office and presented World Cup and club championship awards to Trump as presents.

Earlier, President Trump was asked about unrest in South Boston that involved a police car being set on fire. Trump responded, "If things aren't handled well, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the president of FIFA, who's phenomenal."

He continued, "I'd tell him: 'We should relocate the games' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it without hesitation." Trump also directly criticized Wu, saying, "Boston's mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're dominating parts of Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"

Past Threats and Upcoming Tournament Information

Trump has made previous comments that he would have the similar discussion with the FIFA president about relocating matches from Seattle and San Francisco, which are among the 16 locations across North America.

The US is co-hosting the 2026 tournament with neighboring countries. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be played from June 11 to 19 July next summer.
